             A Letter

Dear Auntie Joan,

Thanks very much for having me to stay last weekend. I had a very enjoyable time. It would have been absolutely delightful if there hadn't been so many small disasters. I am sorry if I caused a lot of trouble.

You really shouldn't have waited so long at the station. I'm sorry I didn't catch the earlier train, but it wasn't my fault.  I thought I had allowed plenty of time. I hadn't realised that the office clock had stopped.  And then the second train was delayed. It wouldn't have mattered if you hadn't been waiting for so long.  You should have left when you saw I wasn't on the early train.

The accident with the two cars was my fault. Please forgive me! I'm not used to John's car.  I should have pulled away more slowly! Never mind.  I'm sure the insurance will pay for the damage.

I'm sorry too about the stain on the carpet. If the cat hadn't squealed so loudly when I trod on its tail, I wouldn't have spilled the wine. I thought I had cleaned it properly, but John tells me I should have put salt on the carpet. If I had, it wouldn't have stained, he says. It's lucky the carpet is a dark one, the stain hardly shows.

Thank you again for the weekend. You cooked all those lovely meals. You are a marvellous cook.

亲爱的琼姨：

非常感谢你上星期周末让我待在你家里。我的确很高兴。如果没有出那么多小问题，一切就十分完美了。我很抱歉给你添了许多麻烦。

你确实不应当在车站等那么久。很对不起，我没有赶上早一些的那班火车。不过这不能怪我。我以为我留得时间很宽裕，我没意识到办公室的钟停了。后来第二班火车又晚点了。如果你没有等那么长时间，那也就没有什么关系了。当你看到我没有再较早的那班火车上时，你应该回家。

两辆汽车相撞的事得怪我。请你宽恕我！我不习惯于开约翰的车。我开出得慢一点就好了！不过不要紧。我敢肯定报信公司会赔偿损失的。

地毯上留下印记的事我也非常抱歉。我踩了猫的尾巴时，如果它没有那么大声尖叫，我不会让酒洒出来。我觉得我是擦干净了大，但约翰告诉我应当在地毯上洒些盐。如果我洒了盐，地摊上是不会留下印记的。所幸地毯颜色较暗，阴极几乎显不出来。

再次为上次度周末向你表示感谢。那几顿饭你做的很好。你是一位出色的厨师。
