1、张道真自学英语第四册第四课(2)  Crossing a Continent 横跨大陆;

       Crossing a Continent

Suppose you lived in the United States and wanted to go from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. If you wanted to go by plane, you could make the trip in a few hours. If you wanted to go by train, you could make the trip in two days. If you wanted to go by car, you could make the trip in a week or less. It would take much longer if you had to walk or go on horseback or by boat.

But the first men to cross North America went this slow way. It gook them a year and a half to go from St. Louis, Missouri, to the Pacific Ocean. They had to carry their own supplies with them. There were no roads to follow, and rivers were often dangerous.

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led the expedition. Forty-five men left St. Louis on My 8, 1804. They traveled up the Missouri River in boats. By late fall the men reached the land of the Manda Indians in what is now the state of North Dakota. Here they built a camp for the winter. Here also they met a French trapper and his Indian wife. The trapper and his wife became their guides.

In the spring of 1805, the men started up the Missouri River again. At last they came to a place where the river divided into three forks. At this place there is now a small town called Three Forks., Montana. They followed one of the forks, the Jefferson River, but the river soon became too small and they could no longer use their boats. They walked many miles before they reached the land of the Shoshone Indians. These Indians gave them horses for their trip over the Rocky Mountains.

The trip over the mountains was dangerous and difficult. Many of the men were sick., and there was little food. On the west side of the mountains, the explorers found the Columbia River. Here they built canoes to use on the rest of their trip westward. In November of 1806, after a long and hard trip, they reached the Pacific Ocean.
