Intelligent traffic systems are also in place for monitoring road accident or detecting violation or giving real-time traffic prediction or forecast.
Christine Zang has more details:
Feature
During the Games, the traffic incident detection system is able to automatically give alarm upon detecting road incidents or road flooding.
Sui yagang, deputy director of the Beijing traffic management bureau, explains:
Male voice: ‘The application of automatic alarm on incidents has shortened the response time of addressing traffic accidents by three to five minutes on average, which helps to ensure the safety and smoothness of major urban roads.’
The traffic detection system consisting of over ten thousand detectors automatically detects millions of vehicles on express roads, arterial roads and Olympic routes, collecting data like traffic volume, speed and occupancy 24 hours a day.
Sui again:
Male voice: ‘It captures vehicles that fail to meet the European No.1 standard for exhaust emissionsand those violating the ban on odd or even numbered vehicles.’
Meanwhile, the closed circuit digital traffic enforcement system automatically monitors nine categories of violations like red light running and speeding round the clock.
The mobile traffic monitoring system has also been equipped in patrol cars.
Male voice: ‘It is used to recognize and capture the image of vehicles that fails for inspecting before the due date or using forged license plates. It may detect about 2200 vehicles each hour, with less than one second for recognition prior to an alarm.’
The installation of the area-control traffic signal system in line with the road network layout has optimized the traffic distribution and improved the operation efficiency of intersections and road sections.
Male voice: ‘The system has increased road network mobility up to 15%. In addition, green time countdown displays and audile signals for the blind are both added for the first time to the traffic lights in the Olympic central zone, giving priority to civil rights and ensuring pedestrians’ safety.’
Beijinghas built the largest scale express road network, carrying over a half of the urban traffic.
During the games time, the traffic lights at the entries and exits of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ring roads and link roads will automatically turn on or off according to the changes of traffic flow along the ring roads.
Sui yagang, deputy director of the Beijing traffic management bureau, explains:
Male voice: ‘When the traffic flow on the express road reaches the warning level, the traffic lights are used to adjust going in and out of the road. Variable ?? Various message signs are also used to notify drivers the traffic condition at the entries and exits, helping them to use alternative routes and to prevent accidents.’
During the games time, real-time traffic information and traffic control measure, and traffic forecast will also be released through various media, such as radio, TV, website and mobile phone.
