Top political advisor: China attaches importance to co-op with Turkey

China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin has said that China attaches importance to its friendship and cooperation with Turkey. Jia said at a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that China would enhance exchanges and mutual trust, consultations and coordination in international and regional affairs, and cooperation in economy, trade, culture, education and tourism with Turkey.

 

China's discipline watchdog targets graft in government-funded projects

China's Party discipline watchdog has vowed to put government-funded projects under scrutiny when the country is investing 4 trillion yuan to stimulate the economy. He Yong, deputy secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) said that they would try to prevent corruption, when a project is tabled for review and approval.    Besides government-funded ones, other projects with state investment would also be the top priority. The CCDI would issue a set of rules to regulate business activities and officials' work as soon as possible.

 

China to operate 16,000-km passenger-dedicated lines by 2020

The Chinese Ministry of Railways has increased the mileage of passenger-dedicated lines planned to be in service by 2020 to 16,000 km in a revised Medium- and Long-term Railway Network Plan. According to the revised plan, China plans to have more than 120,000 km of rail lines by 2020, about 60 percent of which are to be electrified. New lines revealed in the plan, include a line in Liaoning Province linking Shenyang to Dandong, and a line in Henan Province linking Zhengzhou and Luoyang. The revised plan is said to set to modernize the network and help the economy achieve sound and rapid development.

 

China's appliance chain Gome names acting chairman

Hong Kong-listed home appliance company Gome has appointed Chen Xiao as acting chairman after Beijing police confirmed that chairman Huang Guangyu was "under investigation." On Friday, the company said that its chief financial officer, Zhou Yafei, was under police investigation. It said it had appointed an acting financial officer. Gome also set up a "special operations team" to monitor and assess "the impact of Huang's case on the company's financial status and operations." According to the 2008 Hurun Rich lis, Huang Guangyu is the richest man on the mainland.

 

Construction to begin on Saturday on China's tallest building

Construction will begin on Saturday on China's tallest building - a 632-meter skyscraper named the Shanghai Center. The center will be taller than the other two most famous skyscrapers in Shanghai, the 420.5-meter-tall Jin Mao Tower completed in 1999 and the 492-meter-tall Shanghai World Financial Center finished in this August. The building will be completed in 2014 costing more than 14.8 billion yuan (about 2.2 billion U.S. dollars). The Shanghai Center is expected to increase domestic demand and economic growth amid the worldwide financial crisis.

125 killed in Bumbai terrorist attacks

As many as 125 people, including 14 police personnel, have been killed in the Mumbai terrorist attacks. Indian commandos are still battling to flush out militants still resisting in three pockets in the country's financial capital on Friday, over 24 hours after ten near-simultaneous firings and explosions in the vicinity of posh hotels in South Mumbai. Early this morning, sporadic gunfire and explosions continued at a Jewish center. Police said the hostage crisis continued, with several hostages still in the Taj Hotel and another 100 people being believed to be trapped in the Oberoi hotel.

 

Iraqi parliament endorses security pact with U.S.

Iraqi parliament has voted for a key security agreement, which will keep the U.S. military presence in Iraq for another three years. Parliament also voted in for a referendum over the pact, which is to be held late in July next year.  According to the security agreement, called a U.S. withdrawal deal by Iraq, the U.S. troops will pull out of cities and towns in the first half of 2009 and leave Iraq by the end of 2011. The pact also puts restrictions on the operations of U.S. troops and gives Iraqi authorities limited jurisdiction over American service people.

 

Air New Zealand Airbus crashes off Mediterranean Sea, 7 killed

An Air New Zealand Airbus A320 plane on a test flight has crashed off the southeastern coast of France, causing seven people on board to be killed.     The Airbus crashed into the Mediterranean Sea near the town of Perpignan as it came into land at about 5:00 a.m New Zealand local time Friday, killing all seven on board. The plane had been chartered by the German charter airline XL since 2006. It had been returned to the Airbus factory prior to being handed back to Air New Zealand and had been re-painted in Air New Zealand colors.

 

IAEA meeting to discuss Syrian nuclear issue

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has met to discuss the Syrian nuclear issue. According to the agenda, the two-day meeting of the IAEA board of governors focused on nuclear issues involving Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Syria. The meeting discussed reports submitted by IAEA Director General Mohammed ElBaradei on Iranian and Syrian nuclear issues.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said that he does not plan to suspend himself despite possible indictment. Olmert made the remarks in response to Israel's ruling Kadima chairwoman Tzipi Livni, who said earlier that Olmert should suspend himself immediately in light of the indictment facing him over the Rishon Tours scandal. In the double-billing affair, which is named after the travel agency, Olmert was alleged for paying for both of his own and his family's private flights by money obtained fraudulently from public bodies. Meanwhile, Olmert's affiliates said Livni's interest in putting herself on the prime minister's seat.

Chinese theater continues to be more and more adventurous, but a Peking Opera version of a Greek tragedy in which a spurned beauty goes on a killing spree really pushes the boundaries. Taiwan artist Wu Hsing-kuo and his co-workers from the Contemporary Legend Theater are set to "China-ize" the classic fable "Medea" from Greek mythology through the language and style of traditional Peking Opera. Opening Friday night at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, the adapted version with a more Chinese name - "The Lady of Loulan" - tells the legendary tragedy of a beautiful woman. The play features Peking Opera and Xinjiang folk song-inspired music by renowned Taiwan composer Hsu Po-yun and glamorous costumes by Oscar-winning costume and makeup designer Tim Yip.
