Top Chinese legislator says int'l financial crisis not to affect China's co-op with Seychelles

Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo has said that the current international financial crisis will not affect China's cooperation with Seychelles. Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks in his meeting with Seychellois President James Alix Michel. Wu said that China's economy will maintain its momentum of growth.    The crisis will not affect the contracted projects between the two sides as well as prospect of their future cooperation due to the strong growth of China's economy.

 

China planner offers details on 4 trln yuan stimulus package

A senior Chinese planning official has said that the new 4 trillion yuan (586 billion U.S. dollars) economic stimulus package through 2010. Mu Hong, vice director of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said the agency would add 100 billion yuan of new investment during the fourth quarter. The central government's investment, combined with that of businesses and local governments, would bring the total spending to 4 trillion yuan by the end of 2010. The stimulus package was announced amid rising concern about a sharp slowdown in the world's fourth-largest economy.

 

China to step up efforts to improve urban and rural infrastructure

Chinese Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Jiang Weixin has said that the ministry will put boosting domestic demands on top of its agenda and ramp up efforts on urban infrastructure and public utilities construction. China plans to invest 900 billion yuan (131.8 billion U.S. dollars) for housing construction in the coming three years, which would benefit 7.47 million low-income households. Jiang also urged local industry watchdogs to continue pushing forward the energy-saving work in the construction sector.

 

China settles financial information dispute with EU, U.S., Canada

China has settled a dispute with the United States, the European Union and Canada over the regulation of financial information services. The Chinese mission to the WT O said that China reached "mutually satisfactory solutions" with the EU, the U.S. and Canada and signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the issue in Geneva with the three parties respectively. The EU and the U.S. filed a complaint against China at the WTO in March, claiming that foreign information suppliers such as Thomson Reuters, Bloomberg and Dow Jones suffered unfair treatment in China. Canada joined the case in June, with the same complaints.

The media should, instead of mainly reporting Chinese stories, increase international news coverage. Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee said that they should also make efforts to report more original, timely and popular stories during his inspection tour of the China Central Television (CCTV). After eight years and repeated photographs of a nearby star in hopes of finding planets, astronomers, using Hubble space telescope, has finally got the first visible-light snapshots of a planet outside our solar system. Estimated to be no more than three times Jupiter's mass, the planet, called Fomalhaut b, orbits the bright southern star Fomalhaut. Standard & Poor's index jumped 6 percent in the final hour, as investors snapped up the cheapest energy shares on record and real-estate companies gained after CB Richard Ellis Inc. raised cash in a share sale. Exxon Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp. led gains in all 40 energy producers in the S&P 500 and helped the Dow Jones Industrial Average rebound from a 317-point drop. The U.S. Labor Department had also said the number of newly laid-off individuals seeking unemployment benefits has jumped to a level not seen since just after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
